The Bernabò Bath establishment is a fine spa located on the slopes of Colle di Corsena, known as the “hill of wellness” in Bagni di Lucca, in the Garfagnana and Mid Serchio Valley area.
The establishment is named after Bernabò, a Florentine who, in the first half of the 16ᵗʰ century, recovered from a serious skin condition after accidentally being immersed in the muddy thermal waters of the area.
In 1810, Elisa Baciocchi, Napoleon’s sister, built the present establishment which, after a restoration completed in 2006, once again offers the beneficial effects of the famous spring.
The waters of the Bernabò spring flow naturally at a temperature of 102.5 °F (39.2 °C), known for their beneficial and therapeutic properties. They have been used for centuries to alleviate osteo-articular disorders, the myotendinous unit and to treat of arthritis and rheumatic diseases. Indeed, their action is anti-inflammatory, depurative, muscle relaxing and analgesic, contributing to the general well-being of the body.
What makes these waters so special is their rich mineral composition. Calcium helps keep cells stable and supports bone health, while sulfate promotes the renewal of tissues damaged by inflammation. Bicarbonate has an analgesic and sedative action, relieving pain and muscle tension, while magnesium helps reduce excess blood sugar, promoting metabolic balance.
Finally, sodium regulates the passage of fluids and nutrients between cells, ensuring proper hydration and body functioning.
The Bernabò Thermal Bath offers a wide range of spa services and rejuvenating wellness treatments. One of the main treatments available is balneotherapy, availing of the beneficial properties of the waters to promote the well-being of the body. The facility features individual marble baths dating back to the 19ᵗʰ century and a striking octagonal pool, ideal for thermal bathing in pairs or small groups.
This is complemented by mud therapy, where mud is left to macerate for 12 months, enriched with minerals from the thermal water, then applied for a purifying and therapeutic effect. For an even more relaxing experience, spend some time in the Steam Grotto, where the heat and humidity help relax the muscles.
The spa complex even offers specific treatments such as Kneipp therapy, which alternates jets of hot and cold water to stimulate circulation, along with the filiform facial shower, a gentle, targeted treatment for the skin on the face.
The center also offers a variety of massages including traditional massages, holistic treatments and massage therapy with treatments that are ideal for athletes due to their decontracting effect. Additionally available is a variety of aesthetic facial and body treatments designed to improve the health and appearance of the skin.
