Torsana

Torsana

The village near the sky

Torsana is the highest village in all of Lunigiana: it is located at an altitude of 935 m, in the municipality of Comano, surrounded by mountains, vast meadows and forests rich in mushrooms and chestnuts. The houses are built from sandstone: in fact, the village was a place of ancient stonemasons who worked on architraves, portals, friezes, coats of arms and faciòns, the grotesque figures placed on houses to ward off evil spirits.

In the village center, stands the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore, originally a 12th-century construction, with its mighty bell tower, rebuilt in 1826 and again after the 1920 earthquake.

After remaining almost completely uninhabited in recent years, the village is now undergoing major redevelopment and consequently repopulation.

Torsana, like the adjacent village of Camporaghena, is also part of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park.
