Panzano in Chianti

A village in the heart of Chianti amid castles, churches and traditions

A few miles from Greve in Chianti, exactly halfway between Florence and Siena, lies Panzano in Chianti, a medieval village where life flows slowly, surrounded by the vineyards of the famous Conca d’Oro, the valley that opens up at the foot of the village with a mosaic of rows of vines, olive groves and woods.

Things to see

The village is dominated by the Panzano Castle, documented since the 11ᵗʰ century. Its history is linked to the Firidolfi and the Ricasoli Firidolfi, families who played a leading role in the disputes between Florence and Siena.
After the Battle of Montaperti in 1260, the Castle suffered severe damage, yet still retains large sections of the medieval walls, providing spectacular views of the surrounding hills.
Within the ancient village stands the Church of Santa Maria in Panzano, rebuilt in the 19ᵗʰ century on an earlier medieval church. The stone façade harmonizes with the bell tower, which was once one of the Castle’s corner towers.
The interior contains valuable works: a fourteenth-century Madonna and Child, as part of a larger panel attributed to Bernardo di Stefano Rosselli, and an Annunciation attributed to Michele Ridolfo del Ghirlandaio.

Events

The village is enlivened by events dedicated to wine that celebrate the area’s agricultural and viticultural vocation. In spring, Vino al Vino in Cantina takes place, offering an opportunity to taste local labels in-situ.
In the fall, on the third weekend in September, Vino al Vino  enlivens Piazza Bucciarelli, the heart of the village, with tastings and events.

Flavors

Panzano is also known for its ingredients—this is where Dario Cecchini, the celebrated butcher-bard known worldwide as the poet of steak, lives and works.
A stop that has become an integral part of the village experience, where conviviality and tradition unite in front of smokey embers.
