The basilica has no façade but boasts four absides. Next to the Basilica, we find the Research Center “Enrico Avanzi”: 1700 hectares inside the where different cultivation techniques survive (traditional, integrated, organic)
Once in San Piero a Grado, take a rest from the bike in order to visit the wonderful Romanesque Basilica. According to tradition, it stands on the pre-existing remains of an old Christian temple built on the spot where Saint Peter would have landed during his journey to Rome. The basilica has no external facade, but boasts four apses. The interior shows medieval frescoes portraying the first Popes of the Roman Church. Behind, the bell-tower is curiously lower than the church, as it was destroyed by Nazi troops in 1944 and never rebuilt.
Close to the basilica is the “Enrico Avanzi” Research Center: 1700 hectares of land within the San Rossore Regional Park, where different cultivation techniques survive (traditional, integrated and organic), open to visitors with trekking or cycling routes.
