The Canto del Gallo Tour

A looped itinerary along the roads of the Gallo Nero
by  Chianti

An itinerary to discover the origins of the symbol of the Gallo Nero.
At 40 miles (64 kilometers), the route gains 4,265 feet (1,300 meters) in elevation, starting and ending in Castellina in Chianti and divisible into 2 stages.

It is in Castellina, in the hamlet of Fonterutoli, that the historic boundary between Florentine and Sienese Chianti is located, marked in the 13ᵗʰ century following a challenge between Siena and Florence that was resolved in favor of the latter thanks to the crowing of a black rooster (a “gallo nero” in Italian).

To discover these places, start from Castellina in Chianti and follow the road that winds through vineyards and woods to Castellina Scalo. Pay attention to the stretch to Staggia Senese, which may present some challenges due to vehicular traffic.

From Staggia, continue along a solitary road toward the small medieval village of Lecchi until reaching Strolla. A little further on begins the most interesting part of the route, with 4 samples of the great alpine climbs like Giau, Mortirolo, Zoncolan and Gavia.

The return to Castellina in Chianti is an opportunity to rest in preparation for the second leg of the route. In fact, from here, you need to proceed through the Sant’Agnese forest, passing Gaggiano and Cedda until Poggibonsi, renowned for the Fortezza di Poggio Imperiale and the famous Archeodromo.

The return to Castellina in Chianti is all uphill, allowing for views of the Monsanto countryside within the Florentine territory. Ascending to 2050 feet (625 meters) where Macia Morta is found, you then reach the Tumulo di Montecalvario on the outskirts of Castellina in Chianti.
