Rowing races

The Gare Remiere (Rowing Races) form one of Livorno’s most heartfelt traditions, with a calendar of competitions that chronicles the deep connection between the city, the sea and its districts.

Each year, crews from the city’s nautical sections compete in a 10-oar gozzo (a traditional Italian wooden fishing and rowboat), creating a season that combines the sport, folk memory and identity of Livorno.

The races pass through some of the city’s iconic sites, touching on the Bellana, Pontino, Fortezza Nuova, Fossi Medicei, Terrazza Mascagni and the Darsena Nuova.

The heart of the tradition is the rowing triptych, consisting of the Risi’atori Cup, the Barontini Cup and the Palio Marinaro. Dedicated to Tito Neri, the Risi’atori Cup reminisces on the historic figures of the risicatori (stevedores), dockers who braved the sea on a small gozzo to be the first to reach the ships to be unloaded. Instead, the Barontini Cup is held at night along the Fossi Medicei, with a time trial dedicated to the memory of Ilio Barontini. The Palio Marinaro, in the stretch of water in front of the Terrazza Mascagni, is the most representative competition and the perfect conclusion to the season with one of the most striking images of Livorno’s summer.

Alongside the 3 historic races, the calendar also includes the Liberation Trophy, the Lubrani-Meoni Cup and the Santa Giulia Cup, dedicated to different times and places in the city.

Together, they make up an itinerary that accompanies Livorno from spring to early summer, exalting a tradition that involves the crews, districts and the public. The 2026 program includes:

• Liberation Trophy on Saturday, April 25 from 2:30 pm to 6:00 pm, Bellana
• Lubrani-Meoni Cup on Sunday, May 3 from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, Falsa Braga - Pontino
• Santa Giulia Cup on Friday, May 22 from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm, Pontino
• Risi’atori Cup on Sunday, May 31 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm arriving at the Ponte Girevole
• Barontini Cup on Saturday, June 13 from 9:30 pm to midnight, Fossi Medicei
• Maritime Palio on Saturday, June 27 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Terrazza Mascagni
