The starting point is Follonica, where you meet your guide.
From here you ride through the woods along the Maremma coast, with the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago always on the horizon and the scent of Mediterranean scrubland all around, until you reach Cala Martina — where in 1849, Giuseppe Garibaldi, the general who would go on to unify Italy, boarded a boat to escape capture.
Then on to Cala Violina, the “musical beach” — named for the sound the sand makes underfoot. You stop here, swim in the clear water, and after a dip, head back the way you came.
