Hike to Lago Nero in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines
A scenic mountain hike through ancient beech forests to one of the most beautiful glacial lakes in the Apennines
This hike leads deep into the high Apennines to discover Lago Nero, a beautiful glacial lake hidden within a spectacular natural amphitheater. The route is a linear out-and-back trail that allows hikers to reach the lake while exploring some of the most scenic environments of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.
The first section of the hike passes through lush Apennine beech forests, rich in biodiversity and natural history. Along the trail we explore the flora, fungi, and mountain ecosystems that make this area one of the most interesting natural environments of the northern Apennines. As the trail climbs higher, the forest gradually opens up and the landscape becomes more alpine until reaching the glacial basin where the lake lies.
Lago Nero, or “Black Lake,” takes its name from the dark reflective color of its waters. Nestled beneath the dramatic peaks of the Apennine ridge, the lake has a peaceful and almost mystical atmosphere, making it a perfect destination to relax and take in the scenery.
