Sarapino Museum

The Sarapino Museum of Civitella in Val di Chiana gathers together all the rewards (prizes that go to the winner) given to the village’s four districts in the various editions of the Giostra del Sarapino.

The Saracino con l’Ape is a game referring back to the tradition of the famous Saracen joust, based on the re-enactment of ancient events involving arms. 

In this modern and somewhat lighthearted revival, the horse is replaced by the most popular motor vehicle in the countryside in our recent past: a three-wheeler Ape Car.

The original idea dates back to the postwar period, a time when a group of people from Civitella staged a unique version of this game of arms, based on Arezzo's well-known Giostra del Saracino.

The Hall of Spears inside the Sarapino Museum gathers together fine works of local craftsmanship, along with the clothing used by the participants during the event and all the accessories needed for the joust.

This is a place where you can learn about this unique event and appreciate the dedication that the people of Civitella put into keeping it alive.
