The Rocca di Tentennano dominates the village of Rocca d’Orcia, in the municipality of Castiglione d’Orcia, as one of the most important medieval castles in the area. Built on a rocky spur in the 11ᵗʰ–12ᵗʰ centuries and surrounded by multiple city walls, it served as a “sentinel” over the valley and the Via Francigena, protecting transit routes between northern Europe and Rome.
The Rocca originally belonged to the fiefdom of the Tignosi family, vassals of the Aldobrandeschi, then passed in 1251 to the Republic of Siena, which oversaw its renovation. In 1274, ownership passed to the Sienese Salimbeni family as a pledge for a loan made to the Republic during the Battle of Monteaperti. The powerful family maintained control of the fortress throughout the 14ᵗʰ century, during a period marked by conflicts with Siena. Also staying here was Saint Catherine of Siena who, legend has it, received the gift of writing and began to pen the Dialog of Blessed Providence.
The fortress, built of local limestone, features a pentagonal keep and a system of wall enclosures designed for defense, including a powder magazine. From the top, the Rocca offers spectacular views of the winding hills of the Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the village below.
After being donated to the Italian State in 1971, restoration works beginning in 1975 combined conservative and functional restoration, including exposed-brick infill walls, metal fixtures and stairs with gratings made the interior floors accessible while respecting the original architecture. Today, the Rocca houses exhibition spaces and temporary shows, including the San Giovanni Art Room, and is part of the Castiglione d’Orcia museum circuit run by the Fondazione Musei Senesi. Each visit is rendered unique by the walking trail that leads to the panoramic terrace, from where you can admire an iconic landscape of countryside, farms, quaint villages and the gentle lines of the hills of the Val d’Orcia, combining history, culture and architecture in an evocative experience in the heart of Tuscany.
