The Cassero Museum in Monte San Savino is located in the medieval Rocca del Cassero, a fortress attributed to Architect Bartolo di Bartolo and built by the Sienese between 1382 and 1384. The museum, established in 1989, was created at the initiative of the municipality to highlight the village’s strong ceramic tradition. In fact, Monte San Savino is a production hub that specializes particularly in the creation of objects for everyday use.
Among the materials on display are artifacts such as pitchers, bed warmers and pasta cookers from the 18ᵗʰ and 19ᵗʰ centuries, as well as fine manufactured pieces by local companies Giotto, Lapucci and Aretini.
Also preserved in the museum is a fine wooden crucifix by the Siena school dating back to the 14ᵗʰ century, along with a Marzocco (heraldic lion) in pietra serena and sculptures from the 16ᵗʰ century alongside other artifacts unearthed from excavations at the Cassero.
Completing the tour is the picture gallery of the Confraternity of Mercy, with paintings from the 16ᵗʰ and 17ᵗʰ centuries.
Newly open to visitors as of July 1, 2025, there is a revamped tour and layout.
