Walking in the footsteps of the Templars
The ancient path identified on the Leopoldina map is found at the foot of the Rocchette di Fazio Fortress, in the municipality of Semproniano. It starts in Rocchette di Fazio, running past the fountain restored by Leopold, Duke of Lorraine in the 18th century and carries on along the so-called Rocchettini garden until it reaches the Albegna River, where you can admire the Sasso del Nibbio and the Pozzo Diavolo.
In ancient times, it crossed the Bellafreddi Pass towards Roccalbegna, very close to the present-day Rocconi Nature Reserve (currently not accessible).
The path is one of medium difficulty. The length, returning to Rocchette di Fazio via the circular route, is about 2 km and the elevation gain is 270 m. In this last stretch, you can admire the ancient paving of the "Salt Road", along which people once traveled, including horsemen, wayfarers and above all wagons loaded with salt to be transported to the people of Siena.
Moving from the Pozzo Diavolo (Devil's Well), north along the Albegna River, you can get to the entrance of the park path, forming an even larger and more captivating loop. The path is marked in red.
