An itinerary suitable for all, among the villas and pine forests of the coast

An easy ride along the coastline, breathing in air laden with saltiness, offering plenty of opportunities for gourmet stops to savor local cuisine and enjoying a cappuccino or gelato overlooking the sea. Suitable for everyone and with several bike rental points, the route is mostly along bike paths but also includes short stretches of busy road, therefore being less suitable for young children.

Start from Cinquale, with the possibility of taking a detour to explore the striking natural park of the Lake Porta. Head north along the coastal bike path from Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi. You’ll reach the Marina di Massa. A photo stop on the panoramic pier is a must, where the town is backdropped by the majestic peaks of the Apuan Alps. Now, continue toward Marina di Carrara, with the option to detour within the pine forests of Ronchi and Poveromo, spying elegant villas surrounded by greenery.

Do proceed more carefully along the section adjacent to the Carrara port, where the route runs on busier roads.

After passing the harbor, turn left in the direction of the sea. Shortly thereafter, it is highly recommended to temporarily abandon the main track and explore the recently renovated promenade above the breakwater and leading to the characteristic Madonnina dei Pescatori.

Returning to the main route, continue north for just under half a mile (1 kilometer) along Via Amerigo Vespucci, brimming with cafés and bars, perfect for a restorative break.

Upon reaching the intersection with Viale Cristoforo Colombo, turn right to begin the return journey. The route includes some variations from the outbound itinerary to avoid going along one-way stretches. From the Marina di Massa, it is nonetheless possible to opt to return along the same bicycle path traveled at the outset.
