Christmas in Tuscany: special openings at museums!

Spending the Christmas and New Year holidays in a “città d’arte” in Tuscany is a beautiful experience, full of Christmas markets, the smell of roasted chestnuts, big Christmas trees in the main squares, lights decorating the streets and a general special feeling. But sometimes the closed door of a museum can ruin a perfect day! So, here is a brief guide to museum opening times during these next holidays, in Florence, Siena and Pisa. FLORENCE florence winter The Uffizi Gallery and Accademia Gallery at the others State Museums – Pitti Palace, Bargello National Museum, Medici Chapels, Palazzo Davanzati Museum, Orsanmichele – will be close on December 25, but they will all be open on December 26. The two main galleries will also be exceptionally open on January 6 (8.15am-6.50pm). On December 26 and during all the other days (except Christmas), the Reali Poste at Uffizi will be open (10am-7pm) for the special exhibition “Never Seen Before – TURNABOUT. The hidden side of the collections”. For the Palazzo Vecchio Museum, longer opening hours have been planned: from 9am to 12pm on December (22, 23, 26, 27, 28, 29 and 30) and from January 2 to 12. It will be closed on December 25. During the holidays, the Santa Maria Novella complex has a gift for us: a few special open days of the Great Cloiser (December 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 29, 30 and 31). Or, you can start the New Year with an out-of-town day trip to Villa Petraia (9.30am-3.30pm), Villa Poggio a Caiano (9.30am-3.30pm), Villa Cerreto Guidi (1.30-7.30pm), the Villa Castello’s garden (9.30am-3.30pm). And while you’re in town, remember that there is still time to visit some great temporary exhibitions: The Russian Avant-garde, Siberia and the East at Palazzo Strozzi, UNSTABLE TERRITORY. Borders and identity in contemporary art at Strozzina, The Renaissance from Florence to Paris and back at Villa Bardini (until December 31) and IZIS. If you’re in Siena, remember that the extraordinary opening of the Porta del Cielo (Gate of Heaven), after two centuries of restoration, is been extended until January, 6. Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to reach the sky! The Santa Maria della Scala museum will be close only on December 25, while it will remain open on December 24 (10.30am-4.30pm) and from December 26 to January 6 (10.30am-7pm).   PISA These are the opening times to visit the main monuments in town during from December 23 to January 6: Leaning Tower 9am-7pm Cathedral 10am-6pm Battistero, Camposanto Monumentale, Opera del Duomo Museum, Museum of Sinopie, 9am-6pm
