Val d’Orcia Walking Marathon, traversing landscapes and culture

The Scarpinata – Walking Marathon of Val d’Orcia is an exciting event, along a route that is an immersive experience in the beauty and history of one of Italy’s most iconic lands.

The marathon, scheduled for May 18, begins and ends in San Quirico d’Orcia, an ideal starting point for an adventure that winds through the wonders of the Val d’Orcia. The strategic location along the Via Francigena, the ancient pilgrimage route that led to Rome, contributed to its development and historical importance.

Departing from San Quirico, the first stop will be the Chapel of Vitaleta, one of the most photographed symbols of Tuscany. The simple and authentic beauty captures the essence of the Tuscan landscape. Next comes Pienza, known for its Renaissance architecture. Its history is closely linked to Enea Silvio Piccolomini who was born here in 1405 and would become Pope Pius II.

The route continues to Monticchiello, a charming medieval village. Its narrow streets and stone houses tell stories of a past rich in tradition. Here, participants can stop to rest and savor some peace and quiet before tackling the next stage: Bagno Vignoni, a place known for its thermal springs that also attracted the Medici in the past. The central piazza is a lovely place to take a break, immersing yourself in the history and beauty of the surrounding landscape before returning to San Quirico.

Three routes of different lengths are planned.
