The kitchens of San Quirico d’Orcia’s Quartieri open in anticipation of the Barbarossa Festival

On the four weekends preceding the Festival of Barbarossa (June 11–15), the four Quartieri (Districts) of San Quirico d’Orcia—Borgo, Canneti, Castello and Prato—take turns preparing tasty traditional dishes on days enlivened by flag performances and more.

The Quartiere di Borgo, in the beautiful setting of Bagno Vignoni, opens its kitchen on May 16, 17 and 18 to experience the unique atmosphere preceding one of the most anticipated events of the year. Three days of authentic flavors, endless toasts and music under the stars! Among the most anticipated moments are the impressive parade around the Vascone and the performances of the drummers, standard bearers and archers, young and old.

From May 23 to 25, “Il Bianco e l’Azzurro,” the medieval festival of the Quartiere Canneti, is held. From Friday to Sunday, the best of typical Valdorcian cuisine and wines from Val d’Orcia are served. Also scheduled for Saturday, May 24, is a theatrical medieval urban trek dedicated to history along a stretch of the Via Francigena pilgrimage route. Additionally, young flag-throwers and drummers will be followed by a medieval dinner accompanied by a performance of the comedy, “The Last Supper.” On Sunday, May 25 is the Val d’Orcia Medieval Archers Trophy. Then new costumes will be presented for the flag-throwers and historical groups who will then take part in performances and a parade.

From May 30 to June 1 comes “Il Piano in Festa”, the Quartiere Castello event. Three days are dedicated to the Quartiere Biancorosso, with typical dishes, entertainment and tradition in the lovely Piazza Chigi, the heart of the monumental historic center of San Quirico.

The Quartiere Prato launches its “Taurus sub Moenibus” party on Friday, June 6, in the Via Matteotti Gardens with an outdoor disco night. On Saturday, June 7, guests will be delighted with typical Valdorcian dishes. Celebrations continue on Sunday, June 8 with a flag and archery display, accompanied by Valdorcian culinary delights.
