With Roberto Ghezzi’s Naturografie at Poppi Castle, nature becomes a work of art

Artist Roberto Ghezzi reaches Casentino from the most extreme places on Earth, to interact with forests that are good for humanity, and set up his exhibition titled “Paesaggi Assoluti” (“Absolute Landscapes”). The exhibition at the Conti Guidi Castle presents a path of research that interweaves contemporary art, scientific observation and direct study of natural environments, open to the public until May 31, 2026.

Born in Cortona, Ghezzi is an internationally acclaimed artist known for his “Naturografie,” works created through direct interaction between natural fabric surfaces and the ecosystems in which they are placed. In recent years, he has worked in a range of contexts—Italy, Nepal, Greenland, Patagonia—in collaboration with researchers, wildlife parks and scientific institutions.

In the National Park of the Casentino Forests, one of the oldest forest complexes in Europe, the canvases installed by Ghezzi remained exposed to the effects of time and natural agents from July to September 2025. Sediments, organic residues, traces of fauna, microorganisms and changes due to light, humidity and climatic conditions have been deposited on the works. The resulting works have thus become visual outcomes of a process in which the artist and the environment act together.

The works on display in the Armories of the Conti Guidi Castle tell of the secret life of a unique landscape.
