Guided tour of Pitigliano’s Jewish Quarter and Synagogue on the occasion of the Summer Solstice

Taking place in Pitigliano on Friday, June 20, to mark the Summer Solstice, are a series of guided tours to the 16ᵗʰ-century Synagogue and the Jewish Quarter carved out of tuff.

Visits will begin in the morning at 11:00 am, continuing in the afternoon at 3:00 pm (and upon special request, also at 4:30 pm), with a visit to the Synagogue, whose foundations date back to 1598 and which was partly rebuilt in 1995, along with the Jewish Quarter carved entirely out of local tuff.

At the behest of the Medici family, in the first half of the 17ᵗʰ century, the Jewish Quarter became a Ghetto, an enclosed area in which the town’s Jewish population forged a series of rooms for communal use, such as the Forno delle Azzime where traditional bread was made, the Slaughterhouse and Kosher Cellar, the Tintoria where fabrics were dyed, and the Miqvé (ritual bath).

At the end of the last guided tour, at around 5:30 pm, a kosher wine tasting will welcome in the summer.

The event is part of the Arcobaleno d’Estate exhibition.
