Special opening of the RAM

Other events

A special event to celebrate the Liberation of Massa.

On April 10 in Massa, the Rifugio Antiaereo della Martana (RAM, or Martana Anti-Aircraft Shelter) will be open to the public as part of the celebrations for the liberation of the city, which occurred on April 10, 1945, when American troops supported by the Partigiani (Italian Resistance fighters) put an end to the Nazi-fascist regime in Massa, having been hard hit by bombings.

For the occasion, the RAM will be open for visits with special hours from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm and from 3:00 to 5:00 pm
Located on Via Bigini in the heart of the historic center, the RAM is the largest air raid shelter in Massa, able to accommodate thousands of people.

Built between 1942 and 1943 by miners from Belluno, the Rifugio Antiaereo della Martana was dug into the Martana rock, a choice that proved strategic in offering protection during aerial bombardment.
It extends along a gallery of 1476 feet or 450 meters, with 3 entrances, being equipped with artificial openings along the vault, used as ventilation chimneys to ensure air exchange and render the environment livable even when full of people.

This special opening offers an opportunity to visit a place strongly linked to wartime memory and the history of the Liberation of Massa.
