A journey into postwar Italian design and creativity, told in an innovative and original way

The “Made in Italy. Destinazione America 1945–1954” exhibition, running from April 5 to June 29 in the exhibition spaces of the Fondazione Ragghianti in the San Micheletto Monumental Complex in Lucca, documents the evolution of Italian artistic and manufacturing production in the years immediately following World War II. Highlighted is the importance of the relationship with the United States in fostering the development and promotion of Made in Italy design, as well as the relevant role played by Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti.

From Venini glassware to the ceramics of Gio Ponti and Lucio Fontana, via Salvatore Ferragamo’s footwear, the exhibition chronicles a period of great creative ferment and international revival through pictorial, sculptural and graphic works, applied art and objects of design, fashion accessories, set designs, products and documentation.

The exhibition is divided into four sections – The House of Italian Craftsmanship: from Florence to New York, Journey to Italy, Living the Italian Way, New Forms and New Routes – evoking a crucial moment in the promotion of Made in Italy and emphasizing the importance of Italian “savoir-faire”—or rather, “saper fare”—and the relationships between art and design.
