Traditions, stories and popular culture

On September 27, the Fiera degli Uccelli (Bird Fair) returns as one of Colle di Val D’Elsa’s oldest and most traditional events. The origins of the fair are nested in the historic cattle fair also mentioned by writer Romano Bilenchi, traditionally held on September 21 in the town’s large piazza that was constructed in the late 19ᵗʰ century specifically to host fairs and events of great appeal.

During the fair, the piazza would come to life from the early hours of the morning, populated by contadini (peasants), trecconi (itinerant peddlers) and fattori (farmers) arriving from the surrounding countryside to display and sell their wares, transforming downtown into a lively crossroads of meetings, exchanges and traditions.

Even today, the Bird Fair allows people to rediscover the atmosphere and knowledge of the rural world
Agricultural and artisan stands, vintage machinery, animals and local products bring back the atmosphere of the village fairs of yore.

An area dedicated to traditional wooden games is set up for children, with pastimes once enjoyed in the local yards, entertainment activities, fairy tales and puppet shows.
The event is accompanied by popular music and performances, including the traditional Bruscello, an ancient form of Tuscan theater that brings local legends, values and memories to the stage.
