August 22–25 in Casciana Terme sees the return of the Festa di San Genesio, one of the town’s best-loved traditions, dedicated each year to children with games, attractions and solemn moments that involve the entire community.
Among the most exciting events is the blessing of the children, officiated by the Bishop of the Diocese of San Miniato and accompanied by pages, trumpeters and the Grand Chamberlain, a figure who symbolically represents the youngest children.
During the August 24 ceremonial event, the Mayor grants the keys to the city to the Grand Chamberlain and in doing so, entrusts the children with symbolic control of Casciana Terme for the entire day.
The centerpiece of the festival is dedicated to games. For an entire afternoon, the streets of the village come alive with challenges, trials and opportunities for fun involving young and old alike.
One of the most striking aspects of the event is the launching of the hot air balloon and balloons, each accompanied by a message of kindness, with the hope that these words will reach other children and give rise to a lasting correspondence.
