Activities and events to learn about the history of this site

From Sunday, March 1 to Sunday, June 14, the archaeological site of Fossacava in Carrara reopens to the public, with a program of lectures, guided tours and theatrical visits dedicated to the history of the Roman quarry.

Each Saturday as of March 7, you can join a guided tour of the archaeological area, as an opportunity to discover the history of the marble from which Rome was built and the many people who were involved.
Thanks to a secured path, Fossacava is one of the very few marble quarries from the Roman era that can be visited today in Italy and beyond, where signs of the laborious and interminable excavation works carried out over at least 400 years are still visible in the rock. The site contains numerous marble blocks destined to embellish monuments in Rome and other cities of the Empire.

Instead, from Saturday, April 4, dramatized visits to the Roman quarry of Fossacava will make their debut where visitors will be accompanied by a character from ancient Rome, who will tell their own story and connection to the world of quarries in the Carrara area in first person.

The site is open on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.
