Chianti castles: the "ring" of Vertine
Guided tour among the vineyards, villas, castles and historic residences in Chianti territory between the villages of Gaiole and Radda
Second edition of the very successful excursion "Autumn to the Castles of Chianti" with new itinerary dedicated to the beautiful Castle of Vertine and its territory.
A soft trekking in the typical Chianti landscape among the villages in the enchanted atmosphere of the hills, forts and historical "Terzieri" of the League of Chianti. A real journey told in medieval history, made of bitter battles between Siena and Florence, of fortress-castles guarding the border lines, of thousand-year-old parish churches and decadent-looking Gothic masterpieces, but also of sun-kissed hills with incredible views of vineyards and ancient tower-houses, places where nature and man have contributed to create a heritage of incredible beauty.
From the marketplace of Gaiole we will admire the famous statue of the "Gallo Nero " (Black Rooster), we will then walk towards San Donato in Perano crossing the prestigious Frescobaldi vineyards with wide scenery opening towards Radda in Chianti. Following the panoramic northwest ridge, always accompanied by vineyards as far as the eye can see, we will reach Villa Vistarenni, a historic residence built in the 17th century by the Strozzi family.
Through the "trekking route of the Castles" we will reach Vertine, the apex of our excursion, we will admire its stone architecture, alleys and small square. We will marvel at the beauty of the Gothic San Pietro in Avenano and the Pieve di Spaltenna, the last jewel before returning to Gaiole.
The excursion will take place on Sunday, November 26, starting at 9 a.m.
