Girifalco Fort

Take a tour of this ancient fort

Cortona
Cosimo I de’ Medici added bastions and gun ports to the original thirteenth century fort around the year 1550. Thanks to a long period of peace which reigned in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany after the end of the war with Siena (1554-1556), the fort was more or less left unused. It was bought by the local administration of Cortona in 1770.
