Through the forests of Amiata, immersion in nature

By bike to discover the ancient volcano

A trail for the most enterprising bikers on the slopes of a mighty and wonderful mountain, rich in history and vegetation. The route is short and without any particular difficulty except for some steep uphill climbs (ground in concrete) in the first part of the trail. It runs on a mixed asphalt (8 kilometers) and dirt (8 kilometers) surface. The itinerary is not marked and develops into the woods; it has no particular problems of orientation, but for more safety you can contact the specialized guides of Abbadia San Salvatore.

You start from the center of Abbadia San Salvatore at Via Roma (near the Trekking & Bike kiosk) continuing toward Via Cavour and the signs for "Vetta Amiata". You proceed uphill and, just outside the town, cross the ponte sulla Miniera; shortly after the bridge, when the road becomes flat, take the first dirt road on the left characterized by a sign with the trail markers.

Following the main track, you arrive near the old powder magazine; then take the road that climbs on the right and, after a few uphill stretches, you reach a junction: continue on your left and after a short descent you will reach the plane of Mercuri. Continuing on the climb with cemented ground you reach the Cipriana farm where you continue straight; at the end of the descent, avoid the road on your left to proceed uphill to a junction where you keep your right riding on the dirt road (avoiding the next junction to the right) as far as the Pozzaroni farm and the paved road.

When you reach the paved road, turn left downhill to a junction in the locality of Quaranta: follow the central road downhill, at the first junction turn left and after 200 meters take the dirt road again on the left that continues by some houses in the locality of Cerro del Tasca. After a climb you arrive at the locality of Crocetta, which you will recognize thanks to a cross on the right-end side of the road. From this point, the road descends toward Abbadia San Salvatore where you return to asphalt; at the first junction, turn left continuing as far as the tennis courts (on your right); you will also pass by the swimming pool and a small lake and, at the next junction, turn right. When you reach the Esso gas station you turn left toward the center returning, after 400 meters, to the starting point.
