This isn't a very long route, but the total climb is such that you need to be fit. The most demanding inclines are found after Riparbella and before Guardistallo. The brief stretch (1.8 km) along the SR 68, between the SP 14 and Casino di Terra can be busy at times.
Start from Cecina
at the roundabout near the hospital following the signs to Riparbella - Montescudaio. At the next roundabout continue towards Riparbella. Once you've crossed the bridge over the river Cecina and a level crossing, join the SR 68 and carry straight on as far as the junction (5.8 km). Turn left on to the SP 13 towards Riparbella. After approximately 1 km the road begins to climb gradually for 2.5 km to Riparbella
(216 m above sea level, 9.5 km). Ride through the centre of the village.
The road to Castellina bends to the left, while the route carries straight on, climbing steeply towards Il Doccino, Apparita and Pantano. After 1.8 km at San Pecoraio
the demanding climb stops and the dirt track begins just afterwards at Il Doccino
(13 km). Take on the last uphill stretch surrounded by wind turbines before reaching a large junction (14.2 km). Continue straight on downhill towards Pantano, Le Marie and Strido. After approximately 1 km you reach Le Marie,
where there's a plaque that commemorates the fascist massacre on June 25, 1944. Keep left, following the road marked by reflector poles.
For approximately 2 km you cycle up and downhill, enjoying stunning views of the surrounding hills. The descent begins along a firm dirt track. The downhill dirt track comes to an end and heads on to an asphalted road with a T-junction (19.3 km). Bend right. You continue along a seemingly flat road (it's actually uphill) for approximately 1 km before starting to gain height as far as the junction for Miemo
(24.2 km), a castle town
that can be reached with a short detour to the left. The descent down into the Val di Cecina begins just after this. Take in the views over the hills, farms and cypress trees in the valley
. You cycle past Caseificio Delogu dairy farm and the village of Casaglia
before reaching the valley floor and the SR 68 by a roundabout (36 km).
Turn left towards Volterra, cycling through Casino di Terra
. Turn right at the roundabout towards Guardistallo, Canneto and Monteverdi. After 1 km, having crossed the bridge over the river Cecina, veer right towards Guardistallo. After approximately 2 km the climb begins up to the village at the top, climbing hairpin bends for about 2 km. Just before Guardistallo
(42.8 km) turn left downhill towards Cecina. At the junction for Casale Marittimo
carry on towards Cecina, continuing downhill until you reach a obvious junction (51 km). Bend right along the "Paratino" road, which crosses over a roundabout and continues as far as the large roundabout near the hospital (54 km).Download the route map
