The beauty of the Metalliferous Hills by bike

Explore the countryside around Massa Marittima

This route is very undulating, but shouldn’t be challenging. The only real hills are near Lake Accesa and the final climb to the centre of Massa Marittima (2,5 km). The difference in altitude can be reduced by 100m by starting from the service station at the foot of Massa Marittima, on the road to Follonica. In this case, follow the wide ring road towards Siena for around 5km until the junction for Massa. Here, turn right towards the city centre and, almost immediately, take the road on the left towards Ghirlanda and Ribolla.

For the main route, leave from the centre of Massa Marittima, heading towards Siena and Larderello. Shortly before the S.P. 439 towards Larderello, turn right towards Ghirlanda and Ribolla. For around 6.5km the road stays at high altitude, before a downhill stretch which lasts 3km towards the old town – the farm of Perolla is on the left. From here the road heads steeply downhill until a clear T-junction: turn right, following signs for Gavorrano.

After exactly 1.1km you will come across a small road on the left marked by a yellow sign for Castel di Pietra. From here, you can take a short detour to the castle (3 + 3 km): go uphill for 2.3km on a dirt road lined with cypress trees before taking the path to the right and heading uphill for 700m towards the medieval fortress. Leave your bike at the beginning of the path and continue on foot to the ruins on the top of the hill. Then retrace your steps back to the asphalt road. Continue for 2.5km until a junction. Keep right, following signs for lake Accesa.

After a steady uphill you will get to Pesta, the perfect place for a refreshment stop (there’s a café) and another short detour up the road to lake Accesa. Back on the main route, continue until a clear fork in the road: turn right towards Massa Marittima. From here, head downhill until the road which starts at the foot of the Massa Marittima hill, from where there is a final uphill stretch until the Cathedral square (35.5km).
