From mountains to the plains: cycling around Amiata

An itinerary to discover unique landscapes

This route almost completely follows the GR8 of the Province that departs from Castel del Piano. The altimetric profile has continuous changes in incline, and cyclists will pedal on sparsely trafficked roads in the presence of the most beautiful panoramas of the Grosseto side of Amiata.

ROUTE
Departure and arrival point
: Castel del Piano
Difficulty: Difficult
Type of road: Asphalt
Length: 92.000 km
Altitude: 1000 m

Depart from Castel del Piano in the direction of Arcidosso, passing through the community of San Lorenzo. After 4 km, you will arrive at Arcidosso and near the evident roundabout, continue downhill, following the signs for Cinigiano. Near the Coop supermarket, stay left, lightly pedalling up the bicycle-friendly incline on S.P. 7. After approximately 2 km, the road decisively descends to the bridge spanning the Zancona creek, then rises up to the crossroads of Salaiola: continue pedalling in the direction of Grosseto for 2.5 km until you reach Monticello Amiata (14).

From the town, situated in a panoramic spot overlooking Amiata and the Val d’Orcia, continue following the signs for Cinigiano and Paganico on S.P. 7. In constant descent, still on the S.P. 7, you will arrive at Cinigiano (24). From the roundabout in Cinigiano, with the Carabinieri barracks behind you, take Via Grosseto, travelling on it until it meets the S.P. 17, where you will turn left towards Grosseto. Continue in constant descent, observing the majestic mass of Mount Amiata on the left. Pleasantly descend downhill for approximately 10 km until reaching the bridge over the Melacce creek (35.2). Passing over the bridge, pedal for approximately 500 m until coming to a crossroads (35.8), where you will leave the S.P. 17, continuing in the direction of Granaione, taking the S.P. 92 “Costarelle” on the left, in the direction of Baccinello.

You will travel through a beautiful landscape undulating with pastures, cultivated land, and soil on a road that accommodates itself to this territory’s frequent changes in incline. The S.P. 92 ends near a T-junction (42.8), where you will turn left onto the S.P. 24 in the direction of Baccinello and Roccalbegna. Crossing the bridge over the Fronzina creek, you will pedal through the valley bottom on a road that does not exhibit any difficulty. After 3.5 km, you will pass through the community of Baccinello (46.4) and, soon after, you will cross over the Trasubbia Creek: after the bridge (47), begin the incline towards the mountain. Continuously pedal uphill for 7 km, with a little repose just before reaching Cana. Passing through the crossroads for Cana (55.5), continue in the direction of Santa Caterina, Roccalbegna, and Vallerona.

After the cemetery of Cana, the road recommences its soft incline, leading up to the intersection of the S.P. 55 (59) for Stribugliano. Continue in the direction of Vallerona and Roccalbegna, tackling the incline until you reach Santa Caterina (64). At the T-junction, turn left onto the S.P. 160 in the direction of Arcidosso and begin a nice descent, which ends at Roccalbegna (67.4). Passing through the centre of town and crossing the bridge over the waters of the Albegna, begin ascending towards Triana, where the incline increases even more, and continue in the direction of Arcidosso, bypassing the foot of Mount Labbro on hairpin turns that will take you to the mountain pass (900 meters above sea level), before pedalling without much difficulty to the small town of Aiole (84.2), where you will begin your descent, with some technical curves, to Arcidosso (87.7). From here, continue without difficulty towards Castel del Piano (92).
