Cycling through Bolgheri wine country

Among the vineyards of the Etruscan Coast

Enjoy this bike ride through the vineyards of Bolgheri, home to one of the most highly regarded Tuscan wines, cycling as far as the avenue of tall cypress trees, immortalized in Giosué Carducci's poetry.

Point of departure and arrival: Donoratico
Distance: 36 km (46 km with the variation)
Total climb: approx. 200 metres
Average altitude: min. 10 – max. 94
Road surface: asphalt along mostly country lanes
Difficulty: medium

N.B. The route is mainly flat, apart from some slight uphill and downhill parts, which are typical of the landscape of Bolgheri. The route is marked by signs (N° 1).

Start from Donoratico railway station, turning right onto the old Aurelia road that runs through the town. After approximately 70 metres, veer right into Via Piave as far as the roundabour. Turn left into Via della Libertà. In front of the news stand, turn right into Via del Fosso and cycle as far as the T-junction, in Casone Ugolino. Veer left, reaching the junction with SP 329 "di Bocca di Valle". Carry on the right, crossing the provincial road and taking the country road. After approximately 1 km, veer left and keep to the right at the first crossing.

After 1 km, next to a farmhouse on the left, follow the road that veers to the left. The lane runs through olive groves. After 1 km head to the right, in front of Podere Sapaio and continue as far as a sharp bend, which veers to the right reaching the SP 16. Turn left towards Bolgheri. The road, with its slight ups and downs and a stunning section lined by age-old oak trees, runs through Bolgheri's famous vineyards, including world-class Sassicaia.

You reach the Viale dei Cipressi and head to the right as far as Bolgheri. Go back along the whole of the avenue of cypress trees, downhill as far as the chapel of San Guido. Turn left towards Donoratico. After 1 km, next to a restaurant/pizza place on the right, turn off the SP 39 “Vecchia Aurelia”, taking the Via delle Ferruggini on the left. After 4 km, on Via Bolgherese again, turn right (3.2 km) past Fosso di Bolgheri (the road splits into two lanes separated by a large oak tree). Then immediately turn left following the signs for Castagneto Carducci.

After 600 metres, at the T-junction, veer right on to Via di Lamentano. Carry on to the end of the road (2.4km). At the T-junction turn right downhill, past Via Bolgherese, carrying straight on along the country road on apparently flat ground. At the first junction, carry straight on. At the second junction, veer left on to the dirt track. After 500 metres, head right for 950 metres as far as a junction, where you turn left. You are going back to Donoratico railway station, riding past Casone Ugolino, Via del Fosso and Via della Libertà.

POSSIBLE VARIATION: In Bolgheri you can vary the route along lovely Via Bolgherese towards Bibbona. Heading downhill along the Viale dei Cipressi, after a short while, turn right towards Bibbona. The road has sharp yet spectacular uphill and downhill parts among vineyards and olive groves. After 5 km you reach the junction for Bibbona (the town is 1 km away). The route continues straight on downhill along Via Campigliese for 4.5 km as far as the Vecchia Aurelia road, where it bends to the left. You pedal for 1.7 km as far as the chapel of San Guido (on the right), where you resume along the main route.
