Tuscany Walking Festival in the Tuscan Archipelago

The Tuscany Walking Festival is one of the most important hiking festivals in Italy, taking place every year in the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago both in mid-spring and at the beginning of the fall season.

In 2017 the mid-spring hiking events took place between April 8 and May 1st, while the fall session of the Festival is coming right up from September 24 until October 8. Step by step, you will discover the natural treasures, the cultural and food and wine traditions of the islands of Elba, Pianosa, Giglio, Giannutri and Capraia.

September program

September 24 (Saturday)

  • Hike from Sant’Andrea to La Cala – West side of Elba Island
    Info: A 4 hour walk traversing Elba’s spectacular coastline and characteristically Mediterranean scrub.
    Difficulty: medium
    Length: 4 hours
    Meeting point: Capo Sant’Andrea, square on the sea, 10 a.m.
  • Marciana: overlooking the Volterraio castle from the Pisan fortress – West side of Elba Island
    Info: This hike comes after the conference “The castle of Volterraio: environment, history, renovation”, taking place in Portoferraio in the morning (De Laugier Auditorium, 9:30 a.m.). Through archaeological findings, medieval weapons and historical insights, you will learn about the relevance of the Tuscan archipelago and its defensive system back in medieval times.

  • Histories from the sea at the time of the Saracen raids – Giglio Island
    Info: During the hike, starting in Giglio Campese, you will be able to meet a local fisherman and hear about ancient seafood recipes and how they were passed down from one generation to another.

    Meeting point: bus stop Campeggio, near Giglio Campese, 10 a.m.

September 25 (Sunday)

  • A breath of fresh air on the peak – East side of Elba Island Info: The itinerary kicks off from Rio nell’Elba and reaches Monte Strega, covering a fraction of the Great Elba Crossing. On the way back to Rio nell’Elba, you will visit the Hermitage of Santa Caterina and the Orto dei Semplici.

September 29 (Thursday)

  • Marciana-Pomonte: ancient communication routes – West side of Elba Island
    Info: Get ready to travel through time along the ancient Elban communication routes used by peasants, shepherds, pilgrims and soldiers throughout the centuries. This itinerary stars the Sanctuary of Madonna del Monte and the Serraventosa and Troppolo uplands.
    Difficulty: medium-high
    Length: 6 hours
    Meeting point: Piazza della Chiesa, Pomonte, 9.30 a.m.

September 30 (Friday)

  • Where the sea falls in love with the Ballerina – East side of Elba Island
    Info: The hike starts from Nisporto beach, in the surroundings of Rio nell’Elba, where you will discover the history around the furnace called “Ballerina”.
    Difficulty: easy
    Length: 2 hours
    Meeting point: Nisporto beach, parking lot, 4 p.m.

October 1 (Saturday)

  • Biodiversity within the protected area – Pianosa Island
    Info: The trail will guide you at the discovery of fossils, plants and animals characteristic of the island of Pianosa.
    Difficulty: easy
    Length: 5 hours (+ 1 hour to get to Pianosa by ferry from Marina di Campo)
    Meeting point: Aquavision ticket office, Marina di Campo, 9 a.m.
    Pricing: Round trip Marina di Campo – Pianosa € 26,90
  • Discovering the Patresi and Colle d’Orano bays – West side of Elba Island
    Info: This itinerary will take you to the wildest and hidden beaches and hamlets of the western side of Elba.
    Difficulty: medium
    Length: 4 hours
    Meeting point: Colle d’Orano, central square, 3 a.m.
  • Hiking Lo Stagnone – Monte le Penne – Capraia Island
    Info: Get ready to hike along the old mule track that reaches the “Semaforo”, a lookout overlooking the western side of Capraia. Other must-sees of the itinerary are Monte Le Penne and Capraia’s “Laghetto”, the only natural lake in the Tuscan Archipelago.

  • Scent of woods and mushrooms - Giglio Island
    Info: A day dedicated to mycology, in the area of Giglio Castello. After the hike, you will have the possibility to enjoy a special dinner with the freshly picked mushrooms (service available on request).

    Meeting point: Piazza Gloriosa, Giglio Castello, 10 a.m.

  • Colours of autumn – Giannutri Island
    Info: During this hike you will run into the small and suggestive calcareous inlets that are peculiar to Giannutri Island, and the colours of the sea will amaze you, you can be sure.
    Difficulty: easy
    Length: 6 hours
    Meeting point: Porto Santo Stefano, boarding area (you need to buy the ferry ticket first), 9.30 a.m.

October 6 (Thursday)

  • Gli anelli del Raggio Verde – West side of Elba Island
    Info: A brand new itinerary starting from Patresi. You will see the Sanctuary of Madonna del Monte, hike up Serraventosa upland and then continue along the Raggio Verde trail.
    Difficulty: medium
    Length: 5 hours
    Meeting point: Hotel Belmare, Patresi, 10 a.m.

October 8 (Saturday)

  • The hamlet among the chestnut trees and the San Cerbone Hermitage – West side of Elba Island
    Info: A 3 hour hike from Marciana to the “Eremo of San Cerbone” to get you acquainted with the history and use of chestnut trees in the area.
    Difficulty: easy-medium
    Length: 3 hours
    Meeting point: Casa del Parco, Marciana, 9.30 a.m.

October 9 (Sunday)

  • San Bartolomeo Trail – West side of Elba Island
    Info: You will be guided through a hike up the slopes of Monte Capanne, crossing rocky landscapes and taking in the scents of Mediterranean scrub.
    Difficulty: medium-high
    Length: 4 hours
    Meeting point: Piazza della Chiesa, Chiessi, 10 a.m.
  • A hidden treasure trove in the woods – East side of Elba Island
    Info: From Rio nell’Elba to the top of Monte Giove, immersed in the woods. While walking, you’ll encounter the remains of old defensive walls.
    Difficulty: medium
    Length: 3 hours
    Meeting point: Casa del Parco, Rio nell’Elba, 10 a.m.
