Il mare di Baratti e Populonia

The Piombino headland

A round trip to and from Cala Moresca in Salivoli

Point of departure and arrival: Piombino
Distance: 25 km
Total climb: 455 m
Altitude: min. 6 - max. 270
Road surface: mainly dirt secondary roads
Difficulty: medium

N.B. The most strenuous stretch is the steep incline on asphalt towards Populonia. The headland ridge road is a series of twists and turns. The stretch of the itinerary from Piombino along the slopes of the headland requires careful reading of the description.

Leave the car park above Cala Moresca in Salivoli and take Via Salivoli. The road skirts the marina and then joins the Guglielmo Marconi promenade. 200 m after the roundabout, take the second left into Via Ilio Barontini. Follow the road for 300 m until it joins Via del Desco, and continue straight on to the roundabout at the junction with Via della Pace (2.8 km). Go straight ahead along Via dei Lecci for 250 m and then turn right into Via del Pino as far as the carpark. Take the dirt road uphill, keeping to the main track. Shortly after you reach the top of the hill, the track then runs downhill to the asphalt behind the Penny Market supermarket.

From here you ride parallel to the asphalt road in Fiorentina. Leaving the supermarket behind you (on the right), you come to a T-junction, where you turn left uphill, and immediately after, turn right, following the asphalt for about 200 metres as far as an intersection. The asphalt road continues left, while the itinerary goes straight ahead on the dirt road, where you follow the signs for "Woodstock" along the trajectory of the electricity pylons. At the next fork, keep right and follow the main track as far as a T-junction where you go left uphill to the high tension electricity pylons.

Three roads lead down from the top of the hill - take the dirt road on the left that skirts the fence along an olive grove. Keeping left, follow the road as it gently rises and falls. At the first obvious fork, do not go left (towards Asca), but carry straight on between the olive groves on the flat. At a four-way cross road, go right downhill between arable fields as far as the sports fields to rejoin the asphalt. Continue on to the "Tutti i Santi" farm, where the road bends, leaving the farm behind. After about 450 metres, take the second road on the left, which passes a number of farms, and after a bridge, you come to a T-junction and turn left. After 160 metres, take the right fork (the left goes to "Campo alle Fave") skirting a ditch (on the left) shortly after.

After 700 metres, turn left at the T-junction onto a gravel road. On reaching the farm, the road carries straight on, while the itinerary follows the farm fence on the right. Following the main track from here it is easy to reach the Baratti - Populonia archaeological site.

When you come to the asphalt road (T-junction), carry on left as far as Baratti harbour, where the steep ascent towards Populonia begins. After 1.6 km you reach the Reciso hill (of course it is worth carrying on for another 600 metres to Populonia itself) where a dirt road begins on the left, passes San Quirico Church and winds along the Piombino Headland ridge in a southerly direction, re-ascending the slopes of Monte Pecorino (on the right) and then continues towards Poggio Grosso and Monte Massoncello. The firebreak road goes up to Campo alla Sughera (235 MASL), from where you go steeply downhill towards Ghiaccioni (Piombino) and on asphalt to the car park above Cala Moresca in Salivoli.
