The nature train passes through Tuscany in spring

An unconventional way to savor the uniqueness of Tuscany’s landscape, traditions and culture as people used to enjoy in the past

From March to December, you can discover the Terre di Siena thanks to countless ‘slow’ itineraries on a locomotive. This is the perfect means of transport to slowly savor the uniqueness of Tuscany’s landscape, traditions and culture as people used to enjoy in the past.

The Nature Train allows tourists to appreciate uncommon itineraries, the beauty of the landscapes and to enjoy special events at each destination.

Each itinerary, in fact, is combined with fairs, festivals, exhibitions, markets and initiatives, which aim to make you discover the excellent local foods and the extraordinary artistic and cultural heritage of the province of Siena.

This excursion is perfect both for Italian and foreign guests, in particular families with children. The trip takes place on a vintage steam train, which brings visitors into the territories of Crete Senesi, Val d’Orcia and Monte Amiata, making stops at the traditional festivals dedicated to truffles, mushrooms, olive oil, wine, chestnuts and cheese.

2017 spring calendar

If you check the updated 2017 program, you’ll find that the first itinerary is on March 19th and it takes you to San Giovanni d’Asso where you can visit the castle, the truffle museum and the truffle market.

Then on April 17 there will be a journey that, once more, will cross the Val d’Orcia, the hills of the Brunello di Montalcino wine and the Crete Senesi. Arriving in Buonconvento you can enjoy the antiques market throughout the streets. Then you can visit the museo d’Arte Sacra (museum of sacred art) and the museo della mezzadria (sharecrop museum). You can choose to go trekking, too.

On April 23d the journey will take you to Monte Antico and  San Quirico d’Orcia where you can enjoy the Orcia Wine Festival.

On April 25th the vintage steam train will leave from Siena and will take you on a wonderful trip into history and typical local products. It will stop at Monte Antico and will reach Castiglion d’Orcia, where you will discover a beautiful fortress, the old market and a breathtaking vista.

On May 1st you can spend a very pleasant labor day at the traditional festival of Sant’Angelo Scalo, surrounded by music, market stands and good food. Folk bands will perform in the afternoon along the streets, where an outdoor country market will be set up.

On May 14th you’ll visit the places which are famous for the Brunello di Montalcino wine. The tour will bring you to a special event scheduled in Asciano, with food specialities like the pecorino cheese from the Crete and the precious local honey. Stands will display the renowned typical products along the main street in a special edition of the Crete’s market.
There you can also visit the Museo di Arte Sacra, the Museo Etrusco and the Museo Cassioli.

On May 21st in occasion of the train fest the tour touches Torrenieri and Montalcino.

On May 28th the steam train goes from Siena to Chiusi, crossing the Valdichiana, the plain that spans in the southern part of Tuscany. Once in the Etruscan town of Chiusi you’ll be free to stroll freely around the narrow streets and discover all of its sights. In the afternoon you can also visit the Porsenna Natural Market.

But it’s not over yet! The rides on the Nature Train go on until December 10th, leading to San Quirico d’Orcia for the olive oil festival.
