The Municipality of Monusmmano Terme and the Condotta Slow Food of Pistoia are busy creating the “Chocolate Routes”, which takes visitors through an organised itinerary of companies, shops and restaurants, where it will be possible to sample dishes, confectionery and desserts made with chocolate, as well as giving one the opportunity to visit chocolate and wine premises specialized in combining wine and chocolate.
This ideal journey includes Prato, with the Pasticceria Mannori and the Mattei biscotti factory, Agliana with the chocolate maker Catinari, Pistoia with Corsini Confectionery, Monsummano Terme with the chocolate maker Slitti, Pisa with the confectionery and chocolate maker Salza and De Castro (in Montopoli). This area of north Tuscany has been long known by the specialized press as Chocolate Valley. A real mine of this food of gods, where highly skilled, world-renowned craftsmen, are joined by young generations preparing in ensuring the future of this longstanding tradition.
Worthy of a mention, in Monsummano Terme are the world famous chocolate maker Slitti and the ice cream maker Filippo, producing many chocolate based flavour, as well as the ice cream shop Da Gomma in Montecatini Terme and, in the nearby Massa and Cozzile, the chocolate maker Cioccolato & C.. An important exhibition of traditionally made high quality chocolate is held in January in Monsummano Terme: Cioccolosità.
The quality of Tuscan chocolate, developed in response to the decision of the European Parliament, which authorized the addition of vegetable fats to cocoa butter, and of genetically modified products without need to mention it on the label. the objectives of the event are: reinforce the excellence in the production of pure chocolate and the commitment of the Tuscan traditional producers in the innovation of the product; promote the consumption of this product and a better education on taste; promote the individuality of the local producers through a differentiation of the offer, based on an enhancement of the local resources, joined by the expertise of other realities, both from Tuscany and from other regions.
