October events in Tuscany – 2016 Edition

Fall is upon us, and Tuscany is teeming with events, ranging from historical re-enactments and hiking festivals to antique fairs and memorable art exhibitions.

Here is a list of events taking place over the next few weeks to help you plan your holiday in Tuscany. Let us know in the comments which ones you would like to attend the most and after the event, feel free to tell us about your experiences.



Signoria in Festa – Renaissance in Florence, Lippi Garden

October 1-2
Have you ever wondered what life was like in the Renaissance age? Signoria in Festa is your chance to travel back in time and find yourself surrounded by flag bearers and musicians, damsels and knights, archers and jugglers.

Antique Market – Arezzo

October 1-2
Every first weekend of the month, the beautiful historic center of Arezzo hosts one of the most important antique fairs in Italy, starring over 500 vendors from across the country.

Ceramics Fair – Florence, Piazza Santissima Annunziata

October 1-2
Set in Florence’s centrally located Piazza Santissima Annunziata, every year the Ceramics fair gathers over 60 potters from all over Europe.

Santa Reparata celebrations – Florence

October 8
On October 8, Florence celebrates its co-patron Saint with a historical procession that starts from Palagio di Parte Guelfa and ends in the crypt of Santa Reparata, underneath the Duomo.

Fierucolina d’Autunno – Florence, Piazza Santo Spirito

October 16
Don’t miss Santo Spirito’s organic market and the characteristic booksellers, artisans, cobblers and antique dealers that animate the square in the Oltrarno on every third sunday of the month.

L’Eroica – Gaiole in Chianti (Siena)

October 2
Close your eyes and imagine a bike race happening exclusively on gravel roads across Chianti, Valdarbia and Val d’Orcia, where only vintage bikes dating back to 1987 or older are allowed. Ok, now you should have a clear picture of the “Eroica” bike race, which turns 20 years old this year (that means, extra-celebrations!).

Nature Train – Siena and surroundings

October 9, 16, 23, 30
Hop aboard the Nature train and travel through unusual landscapes, hidden villages and timeless tastes in the surroundings of Siena, such as Abbadia San Salvatore, Montalcino, Trequanda and Vivo d’Orcia. Just one more thing: all train schedules always run concurrently with special events happening in the destination towns.

Anghiari’s very own vintage bike race is called the “intrepid,” taking place across the southern part of the Valtiberina Toscana.

XIII National Urban Trekking Day – Siena and other tuscan towns

October 31
On October 31 the city of Siena will lead the 2016 edition of National Urban Trekking Day, happening in more than 50 towns all over Italy. Arezzo and Pistoia are also in, check out the full list of participating Tuscan towns on the official website.

Cooking shows, street food, markets, wine tastings and educational children’s workshops on the streets of one of Italy’s most beautiful towns.

53rd Chestnut festival in Marradi – Marradi (Florence)

October 9, 16, 23, 30
Street bands and plenty of food including local delicacies such as ravioli, cakes, jams, marrons glacés and roasted chestnuts. Lovers of steam trains can also arrive in the old train that connects Florence to Marradi.

Chestnut Festival in Caprese Michelangelo, Caprese Michelangelo (Arezzo)

October 15-16, 22-23
On the streets of the old town and in the square of the Castle overlooking the village, visitors can taste and buy roasted chestnuts, mulled wine, donuts, jams and sweet chestnut polenta.

Benvenuto Fico Secco 2016 – Carmignano (Prato)

October 16
The official public opening of the sale of Carmignano’s dried figs is celebrated with a big festival called Benvenuto Fico Secco, during which there will be cooking shows, contests, markets and workshops in the charming town.

Pisa Food & Wine Festival – Pisa

October 21-23
Pisa Food & Wine Festival celebrates its 5th edition this year. The theme for this year is the Mediterranean Diet, which will include local products and traditional recipes from Pisa and its territory.

Volterragusto – Volterra (Pisa)

October 22-23, October 29 to November 1st
From October 22 to 31 Volterragusto is back in the province of Pisa, showcasing the prized white truffle and the many local specialties of the area. There will be stands and tastings, along with entertainment and activities for the whole family.

Crastatone 2016 – Piancastagnaio (Siena)

October 28-November 1
The festival takes place within the town’s medieval city walls, the Rocca Aldobrandesca, which encircles the old town centre. Food stalls are set up in the streets and alleyways, serving food made from chestnuts.

Sagra del Totano – Capraia island (Livorno)

October 29-31
On Capraia Island, summer season ends in November with the squid fest. Hundreds of people land on the island to taste the specialty squid-based foods such as pasta, polenta, crêpes and much more.

I Centogusti dell’Appennino – Anghiari (Arezzo)

October 29-November 1
From October 29 to November 1, Anghiari hosts “I Cento Gusti dell’Appennino,” a food exhibition and farmer’s market.

Dalí. Il sogno del classico – Pisa, Palazzo Blu

October 1-February 5, 2017
From October 1st Palazzo Blu will be home to over 150 major works by Salvador Dalí, a selection of pieces that will point out the connection between the Maestros of the Renaissance era and art from the master of Surrealism.

The 2016 edition of Pisa’s Internet Festival will explore the “digital fabrics” that currently characterize people and concepts in the internet age.

Centro Pecci Prato (Grand Opening) – Prato

October 16
Prato’s Center of contemporary art re-opens after the completion of the futuristic spaceship-shaped extension by the Rotterdam-based Indonesian architect Maurice Nio. For the occasion, the Centro Pecci presents the exhibition “The End of the World,” featuring the works of over 50 international artists.

Lucca Comics & Games 2016 – Lucca

October 28-November 1st
Every year, at the end of October, the historical center of Lucca is taken over by the largest festival in Europe related to comics, animation, illustration and games.

50 Giorni di Cinema – Florence, La Compagnia

October 28-December 9
The biggest Italian retrospective of cinema since 2007, featuring 9 international film festivals based in Florence, such as France Odeon, Festival dei Popoli and River to River Florence Indian Film Festival. In 2016 the “50 giorni” celebrates its 10th edition by inaugurating the new movie theater “La Compagnia,” located in Via Cavour 50/red.

On October 30 the town of Borgo a Mazzano will be taken over by evil creatures, macabre dances, haunted alleys, movie horror, esoteric experiments, concerts, role games, theatrical reenactments, fireworks and much more.

Starting from September 23, Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, hosts a much awaited exhibition by China’s most famous living artist, Ai Weiwei.

Scoperte e Massacri. Ardengo Soffici e l’Impressionismo a Firenze – Florence, Uffizi Galleries

September 26-January 7, 2017
The new temporary exhibition hosted by the Uffizi Galleries is dedicated to the work and figure of the renowned painter, writer, polemicist and art critic Ardengo Soffici. In addition, the exhibit stars masterpieces by Segantini, Cézanne, Renoir, Picasso, Degas, Medardo Rosso, De Chirico and beyond.
