November is just around the corner, let’s discover together the many events that will be happening in Tuscany throughout the month!
We are deep into the fall season, and of course our cities and towns, our hills, mountains and coastlines have been taken over by the flavours and colours of autumn. Lots of events will be related to seasonal delicacies (new oil, new wine, mushrooms, chestnuts), but it’s not only about food!
November will be filled with art exhibitions (Dalì in Pisa, Ai Weiwei in Florence, for example), music concerts (Garbage and Elisa), trekking events and, last but not least, the 50th anniversary of the 1966 flood and the much awaited feast of Tuscany. Check out our handy guide to the events below.
50th ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1966 FLOOD IN TUSCANY
Over the next weeks Tuscany will host the 50th anniversary of the flood of the Arno river, which happened on the night between November 3rd and 4th 1966, with events and exhibits across the places that were affected back in the day. Here are some tips:
Video mapping on Ponte Vecchio – Florence November 4-18 Every evening, for two weeks, the much beloved Ponte Vecchio will be enlivened by the images of a projection mapping installation dedicated to the remembrance of the 1966 flood.
Video installation on the 1966 flood - Galleria delle Carrozze, Palazzo Medici Riccardi, Florence November 3-30 Palazzo Medici Riccardi’s splendid Galleria delle Carrozze will be home to an exhibition itinerary telling what happened back in 1966 and showing how Florence and the other towns affected have changed throughout the decades.
Exhibition “4 Novembre 1966. L’alluvione a Pisa” – Palazzo Blu, Pisa October 29 to January 29, 2017 The exhibit gathers hundreds of pictures shot by the photographer Luciano Frassi in the days of the flood, starring Pisa and other towns in the area, such as Pontedera and Castelfranco.
On foot in the past: a walk through the Middle Ages – Buiano (Arezzo)
November 6 An itinerary that will take you on a journey through history from the Roman era to the Medieval period in the area of Buiano, along the “Via delle Pievi”.
Nature train - San Giovanni d’Asso (Siena)
November 13 and 20 This November the Nature Train will stop over at San Giovanni d’Asso in occasion of the White Truffle Fair, where you will find food stalls and many local truffle-flavoured specialities. Flavours of autumn with the Casentino Ecomuseum – Talla, Cetica and Carda (Arezzo)
Talla, November 1; Cetica (Castel San Niccolo’) November 12-13, Carda (Castel Focognano) November 27 The Casentino Ecomuseum sponsors a series of Chestnut festivals happening throughout the month in Talla, Cetica and Carda, in the area of Arezzo.
Chestnut Festival - Lupinaia (Fosciandora, Lucca)
November 9Exhibition of old artisan tools, chestnuts tastings, stands with handicrafts and local products.
Autumnia - Figline e Incisa Valdarno (Florence)
November 11-13 A seasonal festival dedicated to agriculture and food and wine traditions that takes place every year in the historical center of Figline.
White truffle Fair in San Miniato – San Miniato (Pisa)
November 12-13, 19-20, 26-27 Starting from November 12 San Miniato hosts the 46th edition of the White truffle Fair, the most famous truffle festival in Tuscany. Discover more on our post "White Truffle Fair in San Miniato, 2016 edition".
Festa di San Martino e dei Bringoli - Anghiari (Arezzo)
November 12-13 A gastronomic event starring the “bringoli”, a sort of handmade spaghetti prepared with water and wheat and served with a mushrooms or tomato sauce. The festival, its tastings and the Vino novello gather every year a huge number of visitors.
Toscana Gustando - Montepulciano (Siena)
November 12-13 In occasion of its seventh edition, “Toscana Gustando” (or Tuscany Tasting) will host both the specialties of the Sienese Valdichiana and the flavours of the Trentino Alto Adige region.
Festa dell’olio - Montemurlo (Prato)
November 13 and 18-20 Taking place every year on the third sunday of November, the olive oil feast in Montemurlo offers tastings of local specialties and freshly made olive oil, guided tours and other events.
Il Desco – Lucca
November 19-20, 26-27 A rich program of events, tastings, recipes, culinary traditions, art and meetings to explore Lucca’s food and wine traditions.
Dolcemente Pisa – Pisa
November 19-20 A national event dedicated to Tuscan and Italian pastries that takes place at Stazione Leopolda.

Until February 5, 2017 From October 1st Palazzo Blu hosts over 150 major works by Salvador Dalí, a selection of pieces that point out the connection between the Maestros of the Renaissance era and art from the master of Surrealism.
Ai Weiwei. Libero – Palazzo Strozzi, Florence
Until January 22, 2017Libero is a much awaited exhibition starring both brand new and renowned pieces by China’s most famous living artist, Ai Weiwei.
Scoperte e Massacri. Ardengo Soffici e l’Impressionismo a Firenze –Uffizi Galleries, Florence
Until December 9 The “50 giorni” (or 50 days) is the biggest Italian retrospective of cinema, featuring 9 international film festivals based in Florence. La Compagnia this year celebrates its 10th edition by inaugurating its brand new headquarters, that is, the new movie theater “La Compagnia,” located in Via Cavour 50/red.
Pop Art, Angeli, Festa e Schifani: the roman school – Palazzo Chianini Vincenzi Galleria d’Arte “La Chimera”, Arezzo
Until January 8, 2017 An exhibition retracing the artistic revolution that took place in Italy between the fifties and the eighties.
ANTIQUES AND HISTORICAL RE-ENACTMENTS
Focarazza rituals – Santa Caterina (Roccalbegna, Grosseto)
November 24-25 An ancient ritual dedicated to Saint Catherine of Alexandria, celebrated every year on the night of November 24th. Here’s what happens: a huge bonfire is lit and villagers and visitors observe the flames rise towards the sky, surrounded by darkness. When the fire loses some force, the participants challenge the heat and try to seize the ‘stollo’, a pole that stands in the middle of the bonfire, perpetuating an ancestral rite of purification.
Festa della Toscana (Feast of Tuscany)
November 30 Every year on November 30, Tuscany celebrates the anniversary of the penal reform introduced in 1786 by Pietro Leopoldo of Lorraine, at the time Grand-duke of Tuscany: yes, our region was the first state in the world to abolish the death penalty! Concert “The Lord of the Rings: the Fellowship of the Ring” – Opera di Firenze, Florence
November 4-5 Starting from November, Florence’s Opera theatre hosts a project that is achieving resounding success all over the world: the Orchestra, the Choir and the Choir of white voices of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino will be performing live the soundtrack of the “The Lord of the Rings", while the movie is shown in its original language on the giant screen right up above.
