Around Siena during March you can almost catch and distinguish the smell of truffles in the air especially in San Giovanni d'Asso which hosts the 8th Edition of the Marzuolo Truffle Market-Fair, "Marzo Marzuolo," beginning on March 6th running through April 5th. This tiny village in the midlle of the Crete Senesi and its soft hills are now transformed into truffle paradise! The Marzuolo (named marzuolo because of the italian for March-Marzo) is a dark truffle that is normally found in the month of March, for this reason the whole month is dedicated to lovers of this precious tuber - a precious jewel- that grows underground and that those who choose to visit will have the chance to appreciate and taste.
Tastings will be possible throughout the month, as well as the opportunity to take part in the truffle hunts organised in the surrounding area. Restaurants will offer local food prepared with fresh Marzuolo truffle and restaurants in San Giovanni d'Asso and Montisi will offer entire truffle-themed menus throughout the month on March. You should also take some time and visit the Truffle Museum situtated beneath the underground vaults of a fourteenth-century castle- here truffles are explained an analysed in an interactive manner from their origins to its properties, you can actually see, smell and touch what a truffle should be like, learning how to differentiate amongst real italian truffles and any other fake that you might find around. Collateral events have been organized alongside the market-fair including an exhibit of the sculptures of Sienese artist Emanuele Giannetti entitled Sogni da Vivere (Dreams for living); sculptures by Francesco Trecci and the permanent exhibit of archaeological artifacts from the digs at Pieve a Pava. All visits and tastings organized as part of the market-fair are free.
