This extraordinary itinerary leaves from Monteaperti, a town famous for its thermal baths and for being the setting of a notorious historical battle between Siena and Florence on September 4, 1260. This atrocious conflict was mentioned in Dante’s Divine Comedy and remembered thanks to the commemorative pyramid which now stands on its hillside. Visitors can catch additional glimpses of the area’s mystique in the locality of Dofana, where Saint Ansano, the patron of Siena, is believed to have been martyred. Dofana’s church and oratory were built on the spot where he was assassinated, in order to commemorate his life and holy works. Visitors to the area won’t want to miss a pleasant stop at the Fattoria San Felice, an estate where one can enjoy locally produced fine wines.
