In Arezzo until March 27 2011, you can get a close look at what restorers are doing to an altarpiece by Vasari. The large painting depicting the Assumption of the Virgin of 1539 and signed by the artist was made for the church of Sant'Agostino in Monte San Savino. The restoration is being carried out in Arezzo's city hall after which it will go on a traveling exhibition in the USA. See the restoration live at the restoration workshop located inside the Corte d'Onore of the Arezzo City Hall (via della Libertà 1). It is open to the public on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11am to 1pm and from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. Visits led by the restorers take place every 30 minutes. A donation of € 5 per person to support the restoration is required. For booking go to the official website vasari500. This is part of the 500th anniversary of Giorgio Vasari's birth - in Arezzo in 1511. Performances, video-art and exhibitions are planned in and around Arezzo for this celebration that will last through the Summer and culminate with the trip to the States in the Fall.
