October 15 to 19 is slated to mark the 20ᵗʰ edition of the Raduno Vele Storiche Viareggio (the Historic Sails Gathering in Viareggio). This annual event officially concludes the classic boat racing season in the Mediterranean. The Raduno Vele Storiche Viareggio is an event reserved for boats belonging to the Vintage Yacht, Classic Yacht, Classic IORs and Historic Sails classes.
Many boats from different countries will take part, rendering this Gathering a unique opportunity to admire a variety of historically valuable sailboats.
The event takes place at the dock of Darsena Europa di Viareggio. At 226 feet or 69 meters, the school ship Palinuro, launched in 1934, will stop at anchor in front of the harbor.
Competitive regattas between various categories of boats are held during the Gathering, as are numerous side events such as conferences, exhibitions and gala evenings.
In recent years, the Gathering has paid special attention to issues of sustainability and environmental protection, promoting environmentally friendly boating practices and raising awareness of the importance of protecting the seas.
The fleet, docked and moored in the harbor, will bring a Floating Museum to life, allowing the public to board each vessel for an exclusive tour. In particular, two hulls celebrating 90 years since their launch will be on view: the Cutter Oenone, designed by Englishman Frederick Sheperd, and the Sloop Gazell, launched in Sweden to designs by Tore Holm.
