The sword, the rock and the crayfish

A striking example of Cistercian architecture set in the unspoiled nature of the Val di Merse, the Abbey of San Galgano fascinates with its special history and unusual, romantic appearance due to the absence of a roof. Inextricably linked to the nearby Hermitage of Montesiepi, which holds St. Galgano's famous sword "in the rock" and valuable 14th-century frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, the Abbey has many secrets to reveal to discerning visitors.

The territory surrounding the Abbey, rich in forests and traversed by the Merse River, features striking landscapes and remarkable biodiversity. Along the course of the river there are still hydraulic factories of medieval origin linked to the history of the Abbey.

This is the scenario that will be the destination of Fuoriscoperte - Appunti di Viaggio 2023 (Travel Notes), curated by Federagit Confesercenti tour guides from Siena. Between September and October, on Sunday mornings an evocative itinerary complemented by a tasting of typical local products at the Antico Tempio restaurant, in the spirit of Vetrina Toscana (the project of the Region and Unioncamere Toscana that promotes the regional food and wine identity).
