On display in the spaces of the Cavallerizza in Piazzale Verdi in Lucca, the exhibition explores the role of light in painting through seventeenth-century masterpieces from Caravaggio - the first director of art history - up to Pietro Paolini, Lucca's leading figure in the most noted aesthetics of the new naturalist school.
On show are about 100 works from Italian and international museums, churches, as well as from prestigious private and international collections of the numerous painters who throughout their life followed Caravaggio, met him, or even perhaps surpassed or anticipated him. They are the luminists, referred to here as "the Painters of Light", because in all their works, light is the real protagonist.
Living, essential, innovative.
Three fundamental moments of Caravaggio's artistic production can be admired in the display: his early work Boy peeling fruit, the Burial of St Lucy, the most important image by the mature Caravaggio, and The Tooth Puller, on loan from the Uffizi Gallery, a work which Pietro Paolini certainly reflected on, given its style and genre.
