The Doorway of the Sun and of the Sea
This structure is in chestnut branches, transparent, large yet light, constructed on land like a boat where we can see the skeleton. Once it is completed, it will be lifted into a vertical position. It is six to seven meters high and the boat will become a doorway that frames the sea. The line of the arch down to the rest of the base will be decorated with a series of lemons, representing rays of light, the golden arch of the doorway of the sun and of the sea.
Antonino Negri was born in 1961. He developed his artistic abilities by frequenting other artists and craftsmen, having worked alongside them since the eighties, in various artistic enterprises – in the theatre – with ceramics – in sculpture and set design. He managed his Laboratory-Workshop of Applied Art and Ceramics in Lodi. In 1993, he founded the “Workshop of Sighs” in the Communità Il Gabbiano, the Seagull Community, which closed in 2003.
He has also created installations of huge dimensions in town squares – in parks and churches, using materials other than terracotta. He also deals with the Theatre, alone with some directors or in collaboration with others, constructing stage sets.
He has made several journeys both in Italy and abroad, meeting the world of art and handicrafts, with particular attention to the world of ceramics, both traditional and innovative, to deepen his knowledge of the techniques, to study the materials and the differing methods of firing pottery.
His favourite themes are inside the symbolic body of the solar year, in the elements of nature, in the cycle of the seasons. These are themes that spring from the images guarded by the breath of time, from the spiritual memory that are studied in the history of religions and deep psychology, that emerge from myths and fairy tales, from the immortal language that continues to speak to us through the forms of symbols.
