To celebrate its 50ᵗʰ anniversary and the ongoing Jubilee 2025, the Prato Textile Museum is displaying to the public an authentic replica of Pope John Paul II’s mantle worn for the opening of the Holy Door at the Great Jubilee of 2000.
The project to recreate the papal mantle and liturgical robes worn by clergy was initiated in 1999. For production of the fabric, the Prato textile companies joined the project 25 years ago, at the time represented by the Unione Industriale Pratese and today by Confindustria Toscana Nord, to collaborate in the creation of the exhibition for the occasion.
In addition to the mantle, the exhibition also presents some of the wall hangings made for the clergy and documents on the design of the textile pattern.
25 years on, the design of the fabric for the papal mantle and vestments represents significant evidence of a work destined to last over time, projecting the extraordinary cooperation between companies and ecclesiastical institutions.
The exhibition forms an integral part of the museum tour and is thus included in the ticket cost.
