On October 4, starting at 7 p.m., the municipality of Monteriggioni is organizing a candle night to bring to the public's attention the issues of light pollution and the importance of preserving the view of the starry sky.
The main public light sources will be turned off at Monteriggioni Castle, while the main square and streets will be lit with candles.
Also contributing to this atmosphere will be the Castle's restaurants, where people will dine by candlelight.
After 9 p.m., “Alla ricerca del buio” (In search of the dark), a traveling theatrical performance by and with Carlo Presotto and Paola Rossi, will take place in Piazza Dante Alighieri. The audience, equipped with immersive radio headsets, will be taken on a nighttime walk of about 20 minutes, discovering the importance of darkness in the lives of people, animals and plants.
The initiative takes place as part of “Going Dark” (October 3 - 5). The workshop, now in its second year, will involve a number of professionals from around the world on the responsible use of outdoor lighting with a focus on that of historic sites, seeking balance between enhancing cultural heritage and preserving darkness and views of the night sky.
