The Mascagni Festival, one of the main cultural and musical events in the city of Livorno, returns from July 9 to September 3.
Hosted in the city's most iconic venues, such as Terrazza Mascagni and Fortezza Vecchia, this edition of the festival presents two important "premiere": the opera Pinotta, premiered in Livorno on the 90th anniversary of its first performance, and Cavalleria Rusticana, the Livorno composer's most performed opera in the world, performed for the first time in history on Terrazza Mascagni.
In addition to these two "mascagnine" titles, the festival program offers a wide range of operatic, symphonic and sacred concerts, theatrical readings, a pop concert and musical contamination events.

Opening the festival is an opera premiered in Livorno on the 90th anniversary of its first performance. The new Mascagni Festival staging will feature a vocal cast selected by the Mascagni Academy. In the centenary year of Giovanni Verga's death, actor Alessandro Preziosi will play Pietro Mascagni, while Marco Bocci will give voice to the Sicilian writer, in a play that outlines the personalities of the Sicilian writer and the composer from Livorno, brilliantly and thoroughly recounting the quarrel between the two referring to Cavalleria Rusticana. The performance will interactively involve the audience in solving an investigation, transforming traditional opera into "opera-game," a format never attempted before.
