Villa Reale in Marlia is considered to be one of the most important historic residences in Italy. In the 19th century, the Villa was home to Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, Napoleon’s sister and Princessof Lucca. Only 8 km from the historical centre of Lucca, the Park of Villa Reale in Marlia covers an area of 16 hectares and features numerous gardens, botanic rarities and impressive architecture – a striking array of points of interest. A variety of buildings from a range of eras are located across the estate. The majestic Villa Reale and the adjacent Clock House dominate the upper part of the property and the central area features the Chapel of Saint Francis Xavier. Toward the south end, you can visit the exquisite nymphaeum, called Pan’s Grotto, and admire the oldest building of the estate, the Bishop’s Villa.
The park is very particular due to its variety of elegantly refined gardens. Hidden from the publiceye, the gardens were greatly desired by Elisa Baciocchi and gave her much joy and happiness during her reign. They are a closely-guarded treasure chest full of secrets, tales, and utterly charming spots.
