Tasting tour between San Gimignano and Volterra
Marvelous tasting tour suitable for small groups or for family
This land already inhabited 2000 years ago by the Etruscans was the scene of medieval fighting also: we are talking of Monteriggioni and San Gimignano, the UNESCO heritage Town of Towers. In this tour we'll also discover Volterra's art of sculpting alabaster and visit places where the the ancient is still tangible.
You'll meet the Guide in front of the San Domenico's church in Siena at 9.30am; if you'll arrive with your own car you 'll find near easy-to-find parking. Travel north into the Chianti hills, an area rich with dense oak wood forests and cypress trees. Let's start the visit with a walk in Monteriggioni, perfect medieval preserved fortress with a 13Th century built complete ring of city walls and turrets. This was mentioned in Dante's Divine Comedy as it was the main defense structure of the Siena city versus Florence's Army. Continue to the fascinating UNESCO site of San Gimignano, with its many austere medieval towers that survive the time proudly standing still today. After that you'll walk along the ancient route of the Via Francigena, the main pilgrim's route that took to Rome and the Holy See. Gimignano has boutique shops of artisanal goods, particularly the local saffron and Vernaccia. After that, enjoy a traditional Tuscan lunch prepared using seasonal products and saffron accompanied by the refreshing Vernaccia white wine. After lunch, we'll go to Volterra: a harmonious combination of art from Etruscan, Roman, medieval and Renaissance architecture, with the modern buildings. Visit a artisanal alabaster workshop and meet the craftsmen. Enjoy leisure time walking in historical centre, at the famous Etruscan museum, at the millennia old Etruscan arch or the Roman theatre.
