Discover Garfagnana area in three days

The first stop of our stay will be the visit of the walls and fortress of Castiglione di Garfagnana, a medieval center that has preserved completely intact its medieval walls of the castle, and the churches of San Michele and San Pietro.

On the second day, we will first visit the fortess of Mont'Alfonso and the Ariostesca fortress of the village of Castelnuovo Garfagnana. The fortress in the sixteenth century hosted for three years the poet Ludovico Ariosto, who - at the time of the Este dominion - has been named Governor of the province of Garfagnana.
Then we will move to Calomini, a monastery with a mystical atmosphere, set in a vertical rocky wall, to visit its hermitage.

We will discover the underground world of the Grotta del Vento, with an exciting excursion in the center of natural park of the Apuan Alps, a hidden and fascinating world that presents an extraordinary variety of phenomena. Comfortable paths will allow you to admire a wonderful reality underground: brilliant stalactites and stalagmites, polychrome flows, ponds encrusted with crystals.

Afterwards, in Castelvecchio Pascoli we will visit, on the Caprona hill, the house where the poet Giovanni Pascoli lived from 1895 to 1912 and where was buried.

On the third day, we will visit a marble quarry in Vagli di Sotto, and then move to Lake Vagli, one of the main attractions of the area. When the lake is dried up for maintenance works, the ruins of a ghost town re-emerge: the Careggine factories.

We won't miss the typical"garfagnina" dinner, with a tasting of the best dishes of the typical cuisine of the area.
