Sasso Pisano is a characteristic medieval village built on a cliff in the center of the geothermal area of the Metalliferous Hills. The village was the subject of dispute between the Bishops and the municipality of Volterra from the early 1200s over the minerals that its territory was rich in.
Products such as alum, sulfur and vitriol, were at the center of the "war of the alumiere" in the 15th century. To control the market of such raw materials, the city of Florence eventually conquered the entire Volterra area.
The town is the starting point for excursions to the natural geothermal events which, between fumaroles, putizze and high temperature thermal springs, welcomes visitors to a hellish landscape called the "Devil's Valley".
